Planning Your New Kitchen - Space Planning

So you’ve decided on what style kitchen you want, right?  Maybe not yet, but as you still ponder white painted beadboard cabinets versus rustic hickory raised panels, let’s dicuss some of other things you will need to consider as you begin your design.  Space Planning.

It sounds sort of scary, and “isn’t this what my kitchen designer is for?” but there are some important things only You know about your kitchen that can help your designer design the BEST kitchen for you.  Take some time while you wait for your pasta to boil and look around your current space.  Consider how you use your kitchen now, and how you can use it better in your next kitchen.

What kind of cook are you?

Are you big into baking?  Do you need space dedicated for your stand mixer, or a surface specifically made for rolling out dough?

Are you a gourmet chef?  Do you have a lot of specialty tools or know that you never seem to have enough prep space for making sushi, beef bourgenoine, or your specialty cakes?
Are you a take out conoissier?  Having space for menus and sitting down for a quick bite are your main requirement?
Maybe you're  an avid gardener and can all your own food. Think about a sink with room to wash the dirt from your fresh produce and space for all your canning supplies.
Next, you'll want to make a list of all the tools you use most.  This way your designer can incorporate storage that will keep everything readily accessible.
Also, it's helpful to get measurements of dishware and glassware so that you know it will all fit into your new kitchen.  Maybe your favorite charger set is too large for a standard wall cabinet, or you have a large collection of glassware you would love to keep prominently displayed.
And lastly, think about the current flow of your kitchen and the adjoining rooms.  Do you constantly run into family members if they need to get to the fridge while you are working?  Do you trip over the cat or dog during feeding time?
Do you wish your back wasn't to your open living room while you are cooking or washing dishes?  Many of us spend a good deal of time in the kitchen and its worthwhile to think about how the space is being used and how we can improve it simply by design.
Your designer is there to translate your needs and wants into your dream kitchen.  Is is a complicated process but that is why you have a designer, a contractor and other professionals there to help you along the way.  We love designing kitchens and making your dreams come true!  Please stop in and visit us at 117 Russell st in Hadley or give us a call to set up a personalized appointment today! 413-586-3506
